Circulation Services

Circulation Services provide access to general book collections in the National Medical Library. See Table below for details regarding circulation rules and regulations. Circulation staff are available to answer questions in person, by telephone (03 7137 201/208) and email circ_lib@uaeu.ac.ae, nmlcirc@uaeu.ac.ae pertaining to library rights and responsibilities, borrowing privileges, checkouts and renewals, reviewing patron records, paying fines for overdue or lost books, placing online hold requests, and creating or changing a PIN.

Borrowing Privileges

You must present your University ID card or membership card to borrow materials and/or renew items. The borrower is responsible for all fines/fees accrued on their account and should notify the circulation desk if their ID card is lost or stolen to prevent unauthorized borrowing.
Note to community users: Journals, reference collections, course reserves, exam books and learning center material are for in-library use only.

Renewals

Borrowers can renew an item in any of the following ways:

  • Online by logging into their Library Account at https://library.uaeu.ac.ae/patroninfo
  • In person at any NML or UAEU Libraries circulation desk by presenting their University ID card
  • By calling NML circulation desk at 03 7137208 or 03 7137201 and providing your University ID number

Only three consecutive renewals for items in the general collections section is allowed. Renewals are not allowed if the item is on hold by another user, the user’s record is blocked, or if the accumulated fine is AED 90.00.

Returning Materials

Items can be returned at any of the following locations:

  • NML Circulation Desk
  • Zayed Central Library Circulation Desk
  • UAEU Main Library Circulation Desk
  • Zayed Central Library self check-in machine
  • Any designated UAEU Libraries drop-off box

Library Holds

Borrowers may place a hold on circulating items within the library system. These include items available on the shelf at another location or checked out by another user. As a hold item becomes available, it will be kept at the circulation desk for a period of three days and the requestor notified by email. Items not picked up after three days will be re-shelved. If a borrower receives notification that an item they have checked out has been requested by another user, and they fail to return that item, they may lose their borrowing privileges. Renewals follow the regular procedure, unless another user has placed a hold on it.

LIWA Holds

Faculty and students may also request books from member libraries of the UAE Higher Education Library Consortium (Zayed University and Higher Colleges of Technology) by selecting the LIWA link in the online catalog.

Fines

The following policies apply to overdue items:

  • Fine amounts are as follows:
    • Regular collection and multimedia collection materials: Dhs 2.00 per day, per item.
    • Course reserve, exam, and LRC materials: Dhs 5.00 per hour, per item.
  • A fine cannot be paid until the overdue item has been returned and checked in.
  • Fines for materials borrowed from the NML must be paid at the CMHS Finance Department, located on the 3rd floor of CMHS building.
  • The maximum fine for each overdue item is Dhs 90.00.

Lost Books and Replacement Fees

The following policies apply if you lose an NML item or if it becomes irreparably damaged while it is checked out to you:

  • In addition to a Dhs 100.00 processing fee, you will be charged the items current list price; except that if the edition of the lost or damaged item is no longer available, you will be charged the list price of the items current edition.
  • Your library account will be suspended until you make full payment of the replacement cost and processing fee.
  • If the lost item is found after replacement payment has been made, it will be charged as an overdue item and a refund will be made to you for that portion of the replacement cost and processing fee that exceeds the amount of the overdue fine.

Suspension and Reinstatement of Your Borrowing Privileges

Your borrowing privileges will be subject to suspension if any one of the following circumstances occurs:

  • You incur an overdue fine of Dhs 90.00 on any item.
  • You lose or irreparably damage an item while it was checked out to you.
  • You fail to return a recalled item by the recall due date.
  • Your borrowing privileges will be reinstated once you have returned all recalled and overdue materials and have paid all applicable fines and replacement costs.

Final Settlement of Fines and Costs

Faculty and Staff: If at the time of termination of your employment contract you have neglected to pay any NML fines or replacement costs, the library will request that the University Finance Department deduct the total amount owed from your final paycheck.
Clearance Forms: In order for your clearance form to be signed by the applicable NML authority, you must pay all fines and replacement costs that you owe to the National Medical Library and the UAEU Libraries.
